Studio Notes with Skip Bailey

Join us at Pinecone Studio for a "House Concert" featuring Skip Bailey. Skip's last performance at Pinecone Studio was a great hit, with the audience encouraging him to continue playing after quitting time. Not only an amazing musician, Skip is also a warm person who enjoys the interactions with the people who come to see him. That's our favorite (and unique) part of Studio Notes!

"Songs about salt of the Earth folks, for salt of the Earth folks." That's how Skip describes his music.

Don't miss this chance to see Skip in this intimate venue!

The Friends of Pinecone Studio

Welcome to the annual Friends of Pinecone Studio event!

Join us at Wild Oats in Brunswick to connect with fellow creative thinkers and explore the beautiful world of Pinecone Studio.

This event will feature vendors and performers from all of our programs. Under our Earth tents, meet artists creating work from repurposed and/or natural materials. Everything from wood working to basket making! Under Poetry, ask one of our poets to compose you a short poem for a small fee on a subject of your choosing (or will they chose for you? :)). In any event, have fun watching them typing out your poem on their vintage typewriters. Under Sketch and In Media, commission a portrait that looks nothing like you or explore the fantasy art of our artists. Do not forget to ask them about our portrait and figure drawing classes while you're there! And lastly, we encourage you to stop by our In Press tent to learn about relief printmaking. Will you add to a community project or make something individual to take home? All of this (and more), as you enjoy your food and drink from Wild Oats while being serenaded by our musical performers in the beautiful June weather.

Family is welcome at this event. The littles will have plenty of opportunity for hands on activities. Phyllis Blackstone will be on hand with a storytelling program just for kids as well.

This in-person event is a great opportunity to meet new friends, share ideas, and immerse yourself in a community of like-minded individuals. Pinecone Studio supports Maine-made art and music, and we can't wait for you to meet everyone! We would also love to share the work of Pinecone Studio with you, so don't forget to learn about our programs and events while you're there.

(Rain date is Saturday, June 29th. If both Saturday and Sunday are stormy, we will be inside Wild Oats on Sunday, June 29th).

This in-person event is a unique opportunity to connect with Alice and fellow music lovers in a cozy setting. Don't miss out on this chance to experience the magic of live music up close and personal!

Alice's bio:

Born and raised on a mountain by the sea in coastal Maine, Alice Limoges was singing before she could walk. With roots grounded in the folk, jazz, and rock traditions of her childhood, Alice's journey led her through seven years in the New York City music scene before the pandemic guided her back to Maine in 2020. Her artistry is marked by her distinct voice, visceral songwriting abilities, and a spirit reminiscent of a classic troubadour.

Alice crafts poetic songs reflecting love, homecoming, and mental health, illuminated by her soulful voice. Whether solo or in collaboration, her performances draw listeners into the intimate space of her vulnerable original music. Having released five independent albums, her song "No One Underneath" stood as a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. Notably, she contributed to the Grammy Award winning album “Ageless: Songs For The Child Archetype” by Jon Samson

Alice's musical journey spans renowned venues like The Cutting Room and Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, as well as festivals and colleges across the northeast. Her expertise extends beyond the stage, guiding aspiring artists through personalized music lessons. Focused on singer-songwriters, Alice imparts technical skill fused with the art of storytelling, drawing from her industry experiences to nurture creativity. Whether sharing her own music or mentoring others, Alice brings beauty and vulnerability into everything she does.

Begin Birding

Welcome to Begin Birding!

Watching the daily activity of our feathered friends can be calming and entertaining. This program by Eric Hynes will guide you in how to learn and enjoy bird watching. Eric will share his extensive experience studying birds; show you the tools used to document your interaction; and share techniques for listening and identifying different species. We will then create your own field guide/ journal to document your “birding” experience.

Join us, because birds of feather flock together!

Guided by Eric Hynes

Eric Hynes has been fascinated by birds and passionate about birding since he first heard the ghostly wailing of a Common Loon at summer camp in Maine more than 30 years ago. Upon completion of his B.S. at the University of Vermont, where he studied environmental studies and wildlife biology, Eric began a serious endeavor as a bird hobo that lasted more than a decade. His travels ranged across the U.S. with a number of trips to Central America as well. During this quest, Eric did everything from monitoring breeding raptors in the Snake River Canyon, to guiding for two summers in Alaska on St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs, to ground squirrel rustling in Montana, to owl banding and hawk counting in Pennsylvania.

Getting married to Christine helped settle Eric into a fulltime position at Maine Audubon but not until after a birding trip to Panama cleverly disguised as their honeymoon. As the staff naturalist and adult education coordinator, Eric taught numerous bird identification workshops and led field trips locally and abroad for Maine Audubon. His positive energy and infectious enthusiasm for all things wild has drawn many a convert to birding and conservation. Eric served several terms on the Maine Bird Records Committee.

Cost is $45 per ticket (materials included).

Nate Winter (panel moderator)

Hailing from Southern Maine, Nate Winter is an emerging singer-songwriter who has hit the ground running since bursting onto the music scene in the Fall of 2021. Nate’s music style reflects an eclectic blend of feel-good Reggae Rock with heartfelt Americana storytelling.

Nate’s debut EP “Missing Piece’’ hit the airwaves in February, 2023. Recorded at the world famous studio Circle House, AKA the mecca of Miami, Nate was blessed with the opportunity to work with the likes of; ”Native” Wayne Jobson (Maroon 5, Jason Mraz), Brian Jobson (No Doubt, Michael Bolton), Paul Fakhourie (Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley), Bernard “Touter” Harvey (Inner Circle, The Rolling Stones), Dave Simmons (KC and the Sunshine Band), and Stephen “Cat” Coore (Third World).

To kick off 2024 in epic fashion, Nate and Ce’Cile premiered their new song “Happy Cup (feat. Ce’Cile)” in a “captivating performance” according to SLEEK Jamaica Media at the legendary Tuff Gong Studio in Kingston, JA for Bob Marley’s One Love 79 birthday celebration. Broadcasted live on SiriusXM, this event hosted performances from Jamaica’s biggest stars including Chris Martin, Jesse Royal, Lutan Fyah, Pam Hall, Dyani, and Yeza. To top things off, Nate had an impromptu exclusive jam session behind Tuff Gong with global superstar Popcaan and Grammy nominated Jesse Royal after his performance. Though the event included a star-studded cast, Nate’s “hit song” stole the show according to Jamaica’s #1 daily newspaper Jamaica Observer making front page headlines reading “Happy Cup for Bob’s Birthday”.

Nate has since released “Letting Go” with Grammy nominated production duo HEDDROKK, consisting of Stephen Lashley and Dave Simmons of KC and the Sunshine Band. This Lovers Rock Reggae single was considered for the 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Performance. To follow this momentum, Nate featured on two records with D-Achee titled “We Live As One” and “Horn For Them” with music videos for each track premiering on Reggaeville.

Whether it’s intimate acoustic sets or vibing with a full band, Nate Winter’s live experience is destined to fill everyone’s Happy Cup. Averaging at least 50 shows per year, Nate is currently touring across the U.S. and Jamaica hitting major cities like Kingston, Ocho Rios, LA, NYC, Boston, Austin, New Orleans, and more. Some notable highlights include his “Missing Piece” release party at the iconic Lewiston Colisee Arena and opening for Dead Prez at The Far Out Lounge while on tour in Austin, TX for SXSW Festival.

If he’s not on stage, he’s likely in the studio writing or producing. In addition to the heavy hitters featuring on “Missing Piece”, Nate has since collaborated with an impressive cast of characters including 2023 Grammy winner Dave Gutter, Ce’Cile, D’Yani, Naomi Cowan, Zia Benjamin, HEDDROKK, and Soun Bwoii to name a few.

Weaving a Life

POSTPONED! PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR A FUTURE DATE!

Welcome to Weaving a Life

The Weaving a Life program, originally envisioned by Maine fiber artist Susan Barrett Merrill, can be approached on many levels, including an artistic journey of self discovery. The most basic, however, is simply handweaving beautiful & symbolic objects called Key forms on a small portable Journey Loom using tapestry and sculptural weaving techniques. All seven of these key forms are common to most cultures throughout the world, and can become manifestations of personal meaning for anyone who creates them.

In this 3 hour class Cathi will give a brief overview of the Weaving a Life program, and participants will weave an Amulet on a 7-stick journey loom. The amulet is a whimsical woven pouch we can wear like a necklace to hold our personal magic, innermost thoughts and small objects that hold particular meaning for us. No prior weaving experience is needed.

All tools and materials are included for use during class: the use of a 7-stick Journey Loom and tool kit, warp threads, weft yarn, beads and other embellishments, as well as all written materials and handouts.

Guided by Cathi Belcher:

Cathi Belcher is an artist, writer, and Certified Zentangle™ & Weaving a Life™ Instructor from Topsham, Maine. She also works in the Library and Theater Departments at Bowdoin, and leads social justice programs in the area.

Cost is $45 (materials included).
