Begin Birding
Welcome to Begin Birding!
Watching the daily activity of our feathered friends can be calming and entertaining. This program by Eric Hynes will guide you in how to learn and enjoy bird watching. Eric will share his extensive experience studying birds; show you the tools used to document your interaction; and share techniques for listening and identifying different species. We will then create your own field guide/ journal to document your “birding” experience.
Join us, because birds of feather flock together!
Guided by Eric Hynes
Eric Hynes has been fascinated by birds and passionate about birding since he first heard the ghostly wailing of a Common Loon at summer camp in Maine more than 30 years ago. Upon completion of his B.S. at the University of Vermont, where he studied environmental studies and wildlife biology, Eric began a serious endeavor as a bird hobo that lasted more than a decade. His travels ranged across the U.S. with a number of trips to Central America as well. During this quest, Eric did everything from monitoring breeding raptors in the Snake River Canyon, to guiding for two summers in Alaska on St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs, to ground squirrel rustling in Montana, to owl banding and hawk counting in Pennsylvania.
Getting married to Christine helped settle Eric into a fulltime position at Maine Audubon but not until after a birding trip to Panama cleverly disguised as their honeymoon. As the staff naturalist and adult education coordinator, Eric taught numerous bird identification workshops and led field trips locally and abroad for Maine Audubon. His positive energy and infectious enthusiasm for all things wild has drawn many a convert to birding and conservation. Eric served several terms on the Maine Bird Records Committee.
Cost is $45 per ticket (materials included).

The Never Ending Stamp Equation
The Never Ending Stamp Equation
The Never Ending Stamp Equation is an ongoing collaborative relief printmaking project where participants create abstract equations using stamps of various iconography, phrases, numbers and more to fill in the empty space in a template created by program supervisor, James Sylvester. Participants will learn basic relief printing making skills in order to print their equations and then will create their own personal equation, as well as work with others to create a collaborative long equation, where they will take turns building off of each other's ideas. We will then discuss and interpret each other's equations.

In retirement she tells stories of wisdom and truth, including folktales, personal stories, and creative narratives. Her audiences include children, families, adults, and senior citizens in venues from classrooms to retirement homes. MY STORIED LIFE is an eclectic collection of real and imagined stories that will tickle the funny bone and bring a tear to the eye. Dr. Blackstone currently resides in Brunswick, Maine. More information is available at blackstonestoryteller.com.

Stevie Trevino: Stevie Trevino turns the clack‑clack cadence of a vintage Smith‑Corona typewriter into a live, collaborative art form. Posting up at street festivals, galleries, and private events, she invites passers‑by to share a word, a memory, or a mood - then alchemizes their prompt into a handcrafted poem in a matter of moments. The result: one‑of‑a‑kind, ribbon‑ink mementos that feel equal parts confession, fortune cookie, and love letter.
Valerie Upham: Valerie brings the art of concept presentation to the audience in the form of quick “commercial breaks” between each guest speaker. She’ll share her experience in the concept development and advertising industry. See how to deliver your message to your market in these focused, brief skits.
Thank you also to The Theater Project for hosting our event and providing actor support.

Weaving a Life
POSTPONED! PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR A FUTURE DATE!
Welcome to Weaving a Life
The Weaving a Life program, originally envisioned by Maine fiber artist Susan Barrett Merrill, can be approached on many levels, including an artistic journey of self discovery. The most basic, however, is simply handweaving beautiful & symbolic objects called Key forms on a small portable Journey Loom using tapestry and sculptural weaving techniques. All seven of these key forms are common to most cultures throughout the world, and can become manifestations of personal meaning for anyone who creates them.
In this 3 hour class Cathi will give a brief overview of the Weaving a Life program, and participants will weave an Amulet on a 7-stick journey loom. The amulet is a whimsical woven pouch we can wear like a necklace to hold our personal magic, innermost thoughts and small objects that hold particular meaning for us. No prior weaving experience is needed.
All tools and materials are included for use during class: the use of a 7-stick Journey Loom and tool kit, warp threads, weft yarn, beads and other embellishments, as well as all written materials and handouts.
Guided by Cathi Belcher:
Cathi Belcher is an artist, writer, and Certified Zentangle™ & Weaving a Life™ Instructor from Topsham, Maine. She also works in the Library and Theater Departments at Bowdoin, and leads social justice programs in the area.
Cost is $45 (materials included).

James Sylvester:
James Sylvester is a Maine-based printmaker whose passion for drawing, carving, and collaboration fuels his multi-disciplinary art practice. He graduated from Maine College of Art & Design with a BFA with honors in printmaking in 2018 and is a member of Peregrine Press, Maine’s oldest nonprofit printmaking cooperative, where he produces his own fine art relief print editions, explores creative monoprinting techniques, and currently serves as President. His practice often bleeds into his surrounding creative community, whether that is through participating in the Portland, Maine’s yearly steamroller printing event and print crawl, organizing the artisan market series Art in the Garden at Bissell Brothers, or running collaborative printmaking workshops across southern Maine at such locations as the Portland Museum of Art, Hinge Collaborative, and Congress Square Park. His work has been shown at Cove Streets Arts, George Marshall Store Gallery, The ICA at MECA&D, Ocean House Gallery, CURRENTS New Media Festival, 82 Parris and more.
Cost is $45 per ticket, includes materials.
